Special Needs Dental Care

Dental Care in Motion offers mobile dental hygiene appointments for people with developmental, sensory, physical or mobility-related needs. We invite clients and caregivers to discuss communication preferences, accessibility and comfort needs before booking. Our hygienists review individual health information and obtain informed consent before providing care.
Dental Care for Clients with Autism
Every autistic person has different oral health needs. Some clients may experience challenges with brushing, sensory discomfort or other concerns. A hygienist can discuss individual risks and appropriate care, including:
- Bruxism, where they grind, gnash or clench their teeth
- Erosion
- Tongue thrusting
- Xerostomia, which is dry mouth
- And, non-nutritive chewing.
Oral health needs vary from person to person. Before an appointment, share any helpful information about daily oral care, communication, sensory preferences and previous dental experiences. The following options may help the care team plan an appointment with the client and caregivers:
- Share the client’s communication preferences and any sensory triggers before the visit.
- Ask about a quieter setting, softer lighting or familiar comfort items when these would help.
- Discuss visual schedules, plain-language explanations or a gradual introduction to equipment and procedures.
- Agree on pauses, choices and a way for the client to communicate discomfort.
- Talk with the hygienist about whether a caregiver’s presence would be helpful and respect the client’s preferences and consent.
- Ask for another appointment or an appropriate referral if a procedure cannot be completed comfortably and safely.
Dental Care for Clients with Down’s Syndrome
Before the first visit, clients and caregivers can share relevant medical history and communication preferences. Tell the hygienist about preferred words or communication tools, sensory sensitivities, positioning needs, and anything that helps the client feel comfortable. The hygienist can review this information and discuss an individual care plan and consent.
Dental Care for Clients in Wheelchairs or with Mobility Challenges
Clients with mobility challenges may need adjustments to positioning, equipment and access. Please tell us about any relevant medical conditions, medications, mobility supports and transfer requirements before the appointment so the hygienist can assess what care can be provided safely.
Oral health care should be tailored to each person’s needs rather than assumptions about a disability. A dental hygienist can review preventive care, discuss oral hygiene at home and recommend further assessment or referral when needed.
